Web Design Blueprints

Future of Web Design  by Mike Sall Just as Western architecture has evolved over the years, so has web design.  The web started out neolithic with basic text structures and links dominating websites, and has evolved into it's current Renaissance aesthetic of clean, logical and precise designs.  However, we are now delving into the state of Baroque design in which the rules will be broken, and websites as we know it will form into complex forms.  Web designers are beginning to curate websites that generate an experience for the user rather than a simple brochure design that many websites are accustomed to now.

Medium Post #3

In this  article , it talks about how video games are distracting everyone from real-world problems. While it does take a financial approach on the topic, it starts to talk about the positives in video games. Positives such as experiencing diversity within the games and how artistic they are. Even though video games are distracting many people from the many conflicts that we face today, they are still influencing people in a positive way

Turns Out Love is Grey https://thecoffeelicious.com/turns-out-love-is-gray-d94eb994f475#.kqiahms4p I read this poem, and I thought it was very interesting how the writer expressed his/her interpretation of what Love was like. A lot of people think that love is some kind of magical perfect Red and pink warm feeling and bright vision but it isn't that. Real love is a roller coaster, its black some days blue on other days, pink, purple, and red again. It makes you feel different things, Love is deep, it isn't just about sticking around during the good times but being there doing the parts that hurt the most too, Real love isn't shallow. Shallow things are things like Lust, Greed, and Gluttony. Love is deeper than that, it takes more force to break it, more pain to kill it, it doesn't bend so easily (not like the iPhone 6+). Love is Grey because it blends that way, and that's what I got from reading this poem.

https://psmag.com/on-the-milo-bus-with-the-lost-boys-of-americas-new-right-629a77e87986#.v1ellamu1 This article struck me as interesting because of the news on milo yinniapolis. He is a very right speaker who consistantly denegrates the left and viciously attacks people online. While never directly contributing to the attacks, however, he himself has poised his fans to do so for him. I went to the speech tonight done by chris nyland in the rotunda. He spoke about his successes within the field of digital marketing and branding. He told us about a very successful event he created, where he went from college campus to college campus bringing brands and creating events wherever he went.

2/23/2017 Update

Wrapping up with CodeCademy, I have been working on tutorials from Superpowers and stripping code/techniques/examples to work on my own project that is still under works. My current focus is on recreating retro-games as a foundation for the medium, then transitioning to a fresh idea.

Exploring CSS Images

How I started drawing CSS Images In this article, the author explored digital art making through some simple CSS, JavaScript, JQuery and the like. She pushed herself everyday to make something new and was able to make considerable progress after a month's worth of learning. This inspires me to follow in her footsteps and start playing around with making some art with CSS that I can integrate into my own site. Not just cute characters but also things like icons and smalls decals to add a certain theme and continuity with my sites.

Advanced Web Dev, Progress Report - Benjamin Greenfield

Benjamin Greenfield EarSketch Progress Report Overview Going into EarSketch I had a basic knowledge of basic web development and years of classical music training. My experience with web had been working with HTML and CSS designing basic webpages. Going into advanced web development I chose to explore learning JavaScript through EarSketch because of its use of sound design as a way to teach JavaScript. First Thoughts At first glance I found the interface for Earsketch intimidating, however upon starting the tutorial, it briefly and effectively walked me through the program. At this point I was comfortable with proceeding, as Earsketch made it clear it will walk you through what you need to know to get the maximum benefit from it. What I’ve Learned (so far) Earsketches learning system is very similar to a standard school textbook. As it explains a concept, teaches you how to execute the work, then gives you assignments to carry out what you have learned. Bel

But even many adults cannot easily wrap their heads around it, so what might be a good way to introduce the concept to elementary school kids? This post touches on one new, interesting method the author experimented with. Much of it comes down to problem-solving, a skill that is never not important to learn and understand.

Travel and Design

https://medium.com/100-naked-words/good-and-bad-photos-of-the-most-beautiful-places-in-the-world-f4af03fb95c0#.a64pkc11u So this week I am traveling and I figured I would look for an article that focused on traveling. This article focuses on the good and bad shots that one can take of nature. A lot of the really good shots I personally think can be used as inspiration for design. In addition to that, the bad shots show us that while something may look great to one, it may not look great to another and that while we are designing we have to look at from a broader perspective. It also shows that we really have to focus on the detail of whatever we are making.

Less is More

Functional Minimalism for Web Design by Nick Babich A minimalist approach toward web design eliminates unnecessary elements and content in order and essentially highlights the importance of the remaining ones on screen.  Web designers use minimalism to strip away distractions while retaining primary functions essential to the user.  I feel it's important to incorporate clean, uncluttered UI because people are so overwhelmed with content online that they want everything streamlined for them.  It compares similarly to a study I read regarding how the Internet has changed the way we as humans read and interpret information.  The availability of data at our disposal at practically any point has caused us to skim articles now rather than read entire writings.  We crave the important information and disregard the rest.  The same is happening to our attention span and interactions on web pages.  Designers need to make their content available without the need for users to take extra s

Medium Week #3-Adapt or Die

https://medium.com/100-naked-words/36-adapt-or-die-54e5d9bcbe34#.a5rmt5xx8      The world or technology is changing everyday and and it's our job as workers in the Digital Space to adapt to these changes or it could mean the deaths of our careers. Advancements in technology will replace old technology whether we like it or not. It's better to jump on new tech or at least play around with it, so that when the new technology or software is the new standard in a certain industry, you'll be ahead of the curve.

Should designers code… or should developers design?

Should designers code… or should developers design?   I always thought and still do that its important to understand the basics of both regardless at what you are best at . The more you understand the others job the better you understand how to do your job better. This article shared an interesting perspective on what it means to be a developer who designs and a designer  who can code.

Medium - Algorithms

This medium post  calls attention to the increasing importance of algorithms in society. In the current digital age, a lot of what we experience on the web and the content we see is based off of an algorithm that analyzes data collected on us. For example, Facebook friends that you have more interactions with will show more on your news feed. This system may bring people with similar interests together, but it also segregates people who have opposing interests and ideas. I think that this is bad because people will be stuck in their own ideals and rarely be exposed to people who think differently from them. It is important for people to hear all sides of an issue and that all opinions be heard. Algorithms on the internet are making individuals more close-minded when I believe that the point of the internet should be to bring people of all types and beliefs together.

2D to 3D design differences

After reading this article about designing in a 3D space as compared to 2D 2D to 3D  . This told me that the techniques used when making user interfaces is entirely different. Its weird that I figured this out now when 2d and 3d have a different experience already so the design should also be different, but relatively relatable. There is a body lock tag along design where the interface follows u. And their is world locked view where the ui is locked at a position and the user can walk passed it like a billboard on a highway. The design industry is going through a major change and it is heading torwards 3d and more a user immersion. I need to learn the wave now or get left behind.

Web App Design Update

Image
Objective: Create an interactive audio-visual web application. Reference:  http://unseen-music.com/yume/ Update: I have looked through the three.js library and have decided on a visual that I want to incorporate into my web application - Interactive Cubes. I have finished the CodeAcademy tutorial on HTML and CSS (refreshed myself) and have begun to start working on the Javascript tutorial. I also started tweaking with Tone.js, and more specifically have been looking at the animation sync section to learn more about synchronizing visuals to rendered visuals. I found code for an  audio spectrum visualizer built with HTML5 Audio API, that I might decide to use.  It allows you to upload a song file, and create visualizations in waveforms.  However, there isn't an interactive component, so if I were to use it, I need to find a way to incorporate it.

Last night I scrapped my entire website and got help from a friend for some redesigns on the side. I have been working in order to build it better than the last since. Up untill this point I had been working on the old site but we both agreed the design was terrible in the end. In addition I have re-learned some of my old javascript knowledge in order to start coding a game in unity. My hope is to have it up on my completed website.

Through CSS, I think it may be possible to make assets for my semester project.

Artie Week 3 Update

After weeks of a slow, painful process, I finally did it. I finished the code academy lesson for HTML & CSS. As fun as coding is, the regurgitation of code is not something I enjoy. I sat down on Thursday and cranked out the lessons. Four hours later, I was done! Along the way, I got many badges and now I feel refreshed. I turned off my laptop and read the HTML & CSS page. Much more fun.  I began to look at portfolios of other designers & web developers to for inspiration .   As I obsessed over the competition online, my brain began to think, and plan. I spent time on illustrator to build a prototype logo for my branding. The logo does not require coding but is an important part helping me determine certain elements of the site This week will think about the content in I want in my portfolio, and once I know what content I want I will build my site to fit my content. I'm having tons of fun and I can't wait to get familiar with Js and D3js. Some other s

Design Something Rather Than Nothing

The Insecure Designer  by Pablo Stanley Getting too worked up on whether or not a project is perfect in your eyes and holding off on it rather than producing something with flaws is detrimental to your creative process.  If you get worked up on what others will think of your work, then you start to become too absorbed in the small details (and chances are people won't even notice them). I definitely see myself as a wannabe perfectionist at times, because I know what I want achieved, and I try everything I can to achieve it, but sometimes it takes me forever to do, and I end up frustrated and fixated on it.  But there are times when I realize that flaws in work sometimes make a piece of work unique - unintended creativity.  And another realization is that there's always room to build and improve my skills when I've moved on to other projects.  So if you're ever caught in a situation where you think you're exerting too much effort and time, relish in what you can

The sum of the steps was basically to breath and think about the things that you are getting distracted by so that you are aware of it being a distraction and basically better organizing your daily goals so that they are your priority instead of the random alerts you get on your phone, coming from social media or some other insignificant thing. While it was different than expected I still enjoyed it and the overall message. The idea that the future is uncertain and that while we shouldn't be preparing the future generation with old methods and skills but rather with more updated skills and methods. We should also be promoting more creativity. Without creativity, the future generation won't be able to think outside the box and progress. In schools today, the arts are being cut from funding more and more. In all honesty, we should be promoting more of the arts as well as the normal STEM classes. Overall, the article makes a good point in regards to making sure the future generation is well educated but is also incredibly creative due to the amount of resources they will have.

"In this post I describe a very simple and useful method for visualizing what part of an image the network uses for its prediction. The approach involves occluding parts of the image and seeing how that changes the network’s prediction. This approach has been described in “Visualizing and Understanding Convolutional Networks”. Self-driving cars today use much more sophisticated methods for detecting objects in a scene, as well as many more sensors as inputs. The ConvNet we examine throughout the post should be seen as a simplified version of what self-driving cars actually use

Is "Anime" considered a Cartoon? (Source:  Anime - Love Lab ) As someone who grew up watching lots of anime, I personally do not consider anime as a cartoon.  In my opinion anime shouldn't be considered as a cartoon because the plot of the show and the way they develop characters are both done differently.  Majority of the western cartoons does not have a continuous plot throughout the series, each of the episode has its own unique story that will not add up throughout the series.  Meanwhile on the other hand, each episode for an anime series develops into a continuous story till it reaches a conclusion.  You just don't get the same feeling when watching a anime compared to a cartoon because the character development is much weaker in cartoons.  When your'e watching a anime, you are on a journey with the main character and seeing or relating to what they are going though. -Redo since I miss understood the blog posts- Designing for communities

I read this interesting poem called " Nocturnal Remission" that was basically about a person who talks to Death (the grim reaper) and to sum it up, they have a conversation about how lonely and sad the job of Death can be, how he never gets to build real relationships with the people he visits because he is there to do a job and that job means death. Therefore the people he visits are either already dead or die when they meet him, and at the end of the conversation Death leaves saying "see you soon" and the person who he was talking to was all like "No hurry" because clearly, they were not ready to die anytime soon. What I found most interesting about the poem was not only the "see you soon" part, but also the idea that Death was complaining about not being able to have real interactions yet this whole conversation between him and this random person was very much interactive and real.  Here is a link to the poem/Medium post: https://medium.com/

Artie's Introduction

I am Arturo Laínez, a junior majoring in DMD with a concentration in business strategies.  I have worked in hospitality for four years. I have worked as a pool matron, cashier, runner, busser, dishwasher, cook, and most recently as waiter. I have also worked in landscaping for the past 6 years. I am originally from El Salvador, a small nation located in Central America. I am also a resident of Stamford since 2004. I aspire to work as a brand strategists for a company like Terakeet. I consider myself a jack of all-trades (possibly master of none). I want to leave this class with the ability to build a comprehensive website for small businesses. I am particularly interested in learning more about javascript & j3query.  I hope we have a great semester! Flaming High Five, Artie

the web is full of creativity

Image
There are many people that believe the web has turned into a boring collection of copied interfaces and designs.  However, the real boring web designs are those in brochure style format, meaning that they are showing off a product or business.  Apple, for instance, uses brochure web design for their products, show casing them on their site will little interactivity - opting to choose user predictability and accessibility, over the creative potential the web has to offer.  Websites have been made to tailor to user needs, which has stifled innovation as many websites adapt to.  However, the internet is full with rich content despite this adopted style by many companies.  For example, the entire ThreeJS library has an every growing amount of content of interactive web designs that are accessible right from the browser. The web has so many possibilities that we can keep adapting and improving the websites that we have to make more creative, interactive ones in the future. MEDIUM BLOG

Flexbox (CSS alternative)

https://medium.freecodecamp.com/an-animated-guide-to-flexbox-d280cf6afc35#.cgoj535kx This was a quick read on how Flexbox works, a simple CSS alternative of sorts that can help a user create more fluid layouts. Flexbox allows the user to manipulate the order, orientation, and spacing of the different divs. Five functions are mentioned in this article - (1) Display; (2) Flex-direction; (3) Justify-content; (4) Align-content; and (5) Align-self. To see what some of these look like, you can check out the article where they are animated gifs that demonstrate some of these functions work. For example, when the article talks about the user realizing they are out of food in the refrigerator it automatically orders more and all you have to do is open the door and take it from the courier. This is already happening today, there are services that allow you to send a text message stating you need something, it will send that message to a service that will provide it and it will be delivered to your house. Medium I read an interesting article on the ulterior motives of trump. in this article the author makes the statement, " he first story is simple: the administration is just doing what it said it would do, literally keeping its campaign promises. Lots of people won’t agree, but it’s playing to its base. They’re also not really good at this whole government thing yet, so  implementation is shaky . The second is more sinister: the  administration is deliberately testing the limits of governmental checks and balances  to set up a self-serving, dangerous consolidation of power."   this is interesting to me because as shown by his personality, trump enjoys being the boss. This bit of thinking got me to wonder just what can trump not get away with ?

Medium Post - Comparing Beat Making to Html/Css

I came across a very interesting article that compares the process of making a Hip - Hop beat to creating a web page using Html/Css, The article was called " How making hundreds of hip hop beats helped me understand HTML and CSS". The comparisons made started with the structure of creating a website. It talked about how with Html you provide a structure to the web page you want to create using syntax like <html>, <head>, <body>, and <footer>. This structure provides the content that will be styled afterward using CSS. In beat making it is very similar the drums provide the backbone the "structure" to the beat and therefore houses the sound that will be styled later when other sounds are added to it. The article also talks about adding a virtual instrument to the beat just like you would add a JQuery plug-in to enhance the page. Several other comparisons are made in the article that are very interesting to look at because it makes you think ho

Medium Post: Starship Design

This Medium article  shares some speculations on the future of starship design. It suggests that future spacecraft will not look like it does in the science fiction of today with sleek, streamlined designs. I think that while there will likely be a lot of large ships that are awkward looking for functional purposes as shown in the article but a streamlined design may be used for certain ships. I see how an aerodynamic design might not be worth much in space where there is no air but most ships should be designed to fly both inside and outside of a planet's atmosphere. It seems this article is talking about a kind of craft whose primary function is residential or industrial and less about personal craft or combat ships. The ships in Star Trek and Star Wars it is comparing to are military vehicles issued by Starfleet or the Empire and fit for battle.

Post on Net Neutrality

https://www.technologyreview.com/s/603432/what-happens-if-net-neutrality-goes-away/ Net neutrality is such a hot topic because it is paradoxical in nature. If you have net neutrality, Netflix for example keeps generating revenue with 4K streaming and the ISP has to give up more bandwidth with no added benefit to their margins. However, without net neutrality, you have ISP's engaging in business arrangements and selective content blocking which would completely compromise the internet as a level playing field.
